John Sebastian of The Lovin Spoonful..."The Bitter End has been one of the most important clubs to me in my musical career"

"EVERYBODY'S GOT A BITTER END STORY"........PLEASE SHARE YOURS IN THE BLOG BELOW!

Nestled on Bleecker Street in the heart of Greenwich Village, THE BITTER END has been a “sweet beginning”, to every major musical and comedic talent in the country for almost 50 years… Woody Allen, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, James Taylor, Neil Diamond, Stevie Wonder, Bette Midler, George Carllin, Jon Stewart, Bill Cosby, Billy Crystal and thousands more can say…“We all played the Bitter End”

“The best play at the best” Paul Colby, the diminutive, soft-spoken entrepreneur, who made furniture for Tony Bennett, was a song plugger for Sinatra and whose canny instincts for talent launched thousands of artists whose names have become household words.

…..Don’t you think it’s about time we thanked him?

"The night Stevie Wonder played the club was a magical night, 13 people on the stage... and an organ....and played all night! I paid him $350 for 14 shows a week!

These are the posters Paul donated to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, we found in his basement, not see in 40 years!

More Memories from Yvonne

Thanks, Sandi, for adding my comments. My apologies for being unable to add them myself. I was due for major surgery the following week and dealing with severe discomfort. I am still recuperating but am doing well.

Just to add some more information to this blog: When I performed at the Bitter End in the mid-60's, and from then on at other venues, I used my first name only. I still have a copy of the mini-flyer I stuck all over town promoting my first evening there.

A decade later, while doing… Continue

My Short Time at the Bitter End

I was barely out of high school when I started playing in clubs. Keyboard players were hard to find at that time, so I always had someone to jam with. Eventually, I found David Duke (nothing in common with the racist ass down south) and my new family, the band. David had a great album with music that was relevant to the times (late 80's) and we (of course) found ourselves at the Bitter End. Since I was the kid, I didn't take much part in anything besides playing, drinking, and chasing girls. But… Continue

From Yvonne Fitzner..."I saw Woody Allen and Bill Cosby in the early 60's"

I saw Woody Allen and Bill Cosby in the early 60's... and played there, myself. My first night was on Tuesday, December 27th, 1966, at what they then called Hootnannies (audtion nights, if you will). Bill Saluga was the MC.

There were numerous performers I saw there, subequent to that. Among them were Linda Ronstadt, The Everly Brothers, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, Robert Klein, David Steinberg, Perter, Paul and Mary...
